‘Together with my TOS colleague Thies Kegge and our delivery crew, we fly to Istanbul, Turkey. Here we rent a car to drive us all the way to Ereğli. Ereğli is a city in the province of Zonguldak situated on the Black Sea. Since the SAAM ITZA is a new build by Med Marine Shipyard, we don’t have much trouble starting up. The usual tasks such as inventory checks, testing of equipment and familiarisation are done by the crew. After a couple of days, the vessel is ready to depart and sets sail for Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala,’ says Niels Barnhoorn, Superintendent at TOS. Smooth Delivery to Guatemala
SMALL BUT POWERFUL TUG
Barnhoorn: ‘Since this is a voyage of more than 7,000 nautical miles, the vessel has to sail for approximately 45 days. It’s a relatively long journey for such a small but powerful tug. The living area on board is limited for such a period. However, the delivery crew is experienced and familiar with long voyages. They work as a team and manage to bring her to Guatemala in time. There were no problems underway and the SAAM ITZA has been safely delivered to her new owner: SAAM Guatemala.’
