Preparation of the Saam Valparaiso at the shipyard
At the beginning of 2020, TOS delivered a new tugboat for the Port of Manzanillo in Panama for our client SAAM Towage. SAAM will use this tug for port operations in Manzanillo and Colon.
On the 26th of January, the TOS crew and superintendent arrived in Turkey. After a few days of preparations at Sanmar Shipyard, the vessel departed to Istanbul to pick up the last stores and fill up the bunker tanks before starting her voyage towards Panama. Roy Hollander, Chief Engineer: ‘When I saw the vessel and met the crew on board, I had a good feeling about this project right away. It was love at first sight. It was nice to work together with the experienced and skilled crew. From beginning to end, the vibe on board was excellent. Even the weather was great. Unfortunately, all voyages come to an end. I want to thank all the crew for this delivery voyage!‘
‘Workers at the shipyard liked the boat very much because of the yellow and blue colour; the SAAM colours. You see, these are the same colours as the Turkish football club Fenerbahçe.’ says Thies Kegge, Superintendent at TOS. ‘Together with all workers at the shipyard and ship delivery crew, we prepared her for the journey across the Atlantic.’
SPECIFICATIONS OF THE ASD RAMPARTS CLASS 2400-SX
The ship was built in 2018 by Sanmar Shipyard in Turkey. She has a length of 24.4 meters and is 11.25 meters in breadth. With the two Caterpillar 3516C main engines of 4200 kW in total, she is a small but strong tug. With her size and power, she can pull up to 70 tons. These specs make her a perfect tug for port operations in Panama, where the ships are getting bigger, leaving less space for the tugs.’
DELIVERY: SEEKING SHELTER
Due to a heavy storm over the Mediterranean Sea, the captain decided to shelter just off the southern coast of Italy. Once the wind calmed down, the Saam Valparaiso continued her voyage. After crossing the Mediterranean Sea and passing Gibraltar, they set course towards Las Palmas to pick up some bunkers and fresh provisions for the journey across the Atlantic Ocean. After 39 days of sailing, the Saam Valparaiso reached her port of delivery in Panama. The captain and crew safely docked the vessel alongside the quay. Another delivery according plan and budget. Owners were happy with the smooth and effective handover.
