COMPASS ADJUSTMENT: NICE WEATHER, PLEASE!
‘Our founder, Kees Wagenaar, started his career as a compass adjuster. And since TOS was founded in 1992, this special craft of compass adjustment still holds a secure place within our service portfolio. As a former seafarer, I know how important it is to have an accurate compass.’ says Myron Dam, Superintendent at TOS. ‘Over the last months, I’ve received training on the job to become a compass adjuster within TOS. Most of my time working is spent preparing the departure and the voyage of ship deliveries. To support our pool of compass adjusters, I learned all about the different types of compasses and the different methods and theory to adjust them. Did you know that there are more than 25 types of compasses? It is also important to know the landmarks for use as reference points at every location on our coastline. So, as you can image, you really need training on the job to become a qualified TOS compass adjuster.’
FIRST SOLO ADJUSTMENT
‘Last week it finally happened: my first solo adjustment. We received a job for a patrol vessel. The location was Hoek van Holland, and the weather was just fine :). The compass was somewhat old (over 20 years), and the brand was a C.Plath. The adjustment went smoothly using nearby landmarks. Another satisfied customer! Thank you Jeroen, old sea dog, for the training on the job!’
