He did it again! Our Ship Delivery Captain Piet Smit delivered the third of a series of IHC Dredgers.
I brought an Easydredge 3700 to its port of destination twice. Lovely trips to the Maldives and Cuba. Now it’s the turn of Mont Mandara, an Easydredge 2700. This trip is from Poland via Rotterdam to Douala, Cameroon. On 21 July, we fly from Schiphol to Berlin and then on to Świnoujście, where the Mont Mandara awaits us. We board the vessel with the Royal IHC engineers on the 22nd to familiarise ourselves with the ship. We do the necessary safety drills to prepare for the Lloyd’s and the insurance company’s inspections. Everything is going well. Once we have all the certificates, we head to Hardinxveld in the Netherlands. Barring any problems, we arrive at Royal IHC on 4 August.
SEA TRIALS DREDGER: CHECK
IHC does the required tests in Hardinxveld and the shipyard, if necessary, makes adjustments to the dredger. Some are needed for the passage along the coast of Africa. Everyone is satisfied so we can start the sea trials. IHC has put aside two days for the sea trials. On day one we sail towards Europort to adjust the dredging material. On day two we go to sea for the inspections and tests. It is good weather at sea and after the sea trials we turn around and head back to Hardinxveld to sign the handover. Job done!
During the trials, IHC requested that all technicians be provided with food and drink during their stay in Hardinxveld. The number of extra people ranged from 15 to 25. An additional cook was arranged through TOS and supplies were purchased. We also purchased extra furniture to make this happen. With the help of the crew, the dredger was made high-risk-area proof, according BMPWA.
TRIP TO DOUALA
We set off for Douala, Cameroon, on 20 August. This crossing is smooth sailing. We only have bad weather in the English Channel. Our ETA is 8 September. During the trip we do as much cleaning as we can and give the Mont Mandara a fresh coat of paint. We are on schedule entirely and berth in Douala on 8 September. We receive an official escort. For the last 25 miles, the Marine Nationale accompany the dredger to the port where a large reception committee awaits us. The guests toast the arrival of the Mont Mandara. The customer is very proud and satisfied as this is their first fully owned vessel. It’s wonderful to see! The crew stay on board for three days for instructions. After a Covid-19 test, we start our return trip on 11 September.
